hey youall, Ems gone for a bit, he was to fucked up and busy to meet and great you so I'm here to help out.
No intro necessary, lets just jump into the meat of things.
The portrait show at the Regency gallery was a hugh event. Lots of interesting folks got a chance to see some really good art. To bad more people didn't sneak a peek at the foto show next door where a bitching two piece band was rocking out but, hey those things happen. A lot of people kicked ass to make the show happen, the artists, one and all, fantastic, with susie moon and daz helping more than anyone will ever know. It was only the second show at Lilli and em's new gallery and filled with very cool people and a few phycos that added a bit of flavor. A long and strange night after the show closed with an exodus to Petes for some refreshers than a mad dash to the higgans for some really monumental meltdowns and assorted twisted encounters. It took my little buddy em two days to recover and the rest of the crew( have yet to be heard from). Only the hidden cameras know. but fun was had by all! Martha and Jon at the Higgans deserves a very special thank you for storing an emmeric painting that came from a naughty little party that still sits in their bathroom. He is a looser but promises to get it soon. If you were to drunk to make it to Robert Renalds show the same night at the Bank Building, you fucked up. What an amazing show, best seen at night for full effect( when you see it you'll under stand).
I plan on being here at least once a week so keep checking in

sorry its been so long since I've written, a LOT has been going on! Some good, some not so good. But last night I was at a wonderful event, one of my best friends got married, Chad Robertson, it was an incredible event and I was very blessed to have been a part of it!
My life has been in a lot of turmoil, things they are a changin! Good thing, I've been painting my ass off and really happy with the new work. The old fraze shut up and paint is the best advise I've ever gotten. When I get down and depressed its the only thing that works!

Last night I did a performance painting @ thw FAR show on 4th & Spring in Down Town LA, put together by the fabulious artist Launa Bacon. It was a fantastic night with music by one of my favorite bands Cinders. While the booze came from Petes Cafe with Rick passing out the suds( his band plays Saturday night at BAR 107), the music rocked the croud was very cool, including one of my favorite bartenders from Craby Joes, my favorite dive bar, Leon, and I painted my ass off. A very cool show!

The Foundation for Art Resources (F.A.R.) is presenting FAR at 4th & Spring on Thursday, December 8, at 408 S. Spring St. in downtown Los Angeles. The event includes a full program of video and performance art, live music and DJs, as well as raffle giveaways and a cash bar. Scheduled to coincide with the monthly Downtown Art Walk, FAR at 4th and Spring is an event designed to enrich and entertain its audience with art and art happenings. There will be a suggested $10 admission fee, as well as a raffle intended to raise money in support of our upcoming 2006 programming season. The majority of F.A.R.’s annual programming is entirely free and open to the public.

Taking place on the ground floor of the 1908 Continental Building, in the heart of Downtown’s historic core, FAR at 4th & Spring will transform this richly historic location into a multimedia art happening with music from Cinders, Katzenjammer, Layer and DJ Jozef. Performer Tamara Cimmerian calls herself Katzenjammer which means “a state of utter bewilderment” – this one-woman band writes all her own music and lyrics, plays piano and keyboards, and programs. Her style is versatile and unique and her voice is hauntingly beautiful. Cinders consists of A., Neves, and Charles, former Kraftwerk button pushers, now rock & roll circus. Layer is a musical and visual exploration, featuring guitarist/keyboardist/composer Eric Layer, bassist Richard Chui, and drummer Jon Wicks (Money Mark), who join forces to create mind-bending space rock with accompanying live visuals created and mixed by local VJ FOC:EYE. DJ Jozef spins a unique mix of early funky soul and modern dance punk – so be sure to bring your dancing shoes!

Also featured will be a live performance by artist Janice Gomez, a VJ set from the Image Cartel, live painting by Emmeric Konrad, and video and animation by the students of the Armory Center for the Arts (Pasadena). A cash bar will be provided by Pete’s Café and raffle giveaways include goodies from a number of businesses, including VAMP shoes and Kendall’s Grill.

The Foundation for Art Resources (F.A.R.) is an all-volunteer, artist-run, nonprofit organization providing programs and opportunities designed to build a vital interaction among the creative communities of Los Angeles. F.A.R., a 501(c)(3) organization, was founded in 1977 to facilitate the production and presentation of work by artists who challenge and expand the boundaries of established notions of art and art-making within the Los Angeles region. Hey, fuck you, I love my cat. I just had a melt down in my bathroom, realizing my cat is 11 years old and going to die some day. Hey, I've had a few to many friends die in the last year, and Qui( my cat) is pretty much the only critter living who I feel a real connection with. What, does that make me anti social? Fuck you twice! I love my cat, he sleeps with me, tolerates my strange and undefinable mood swings, he even sits in the bath tub with me( though I don't think he likes it very much) what woman would ever put up with my psychotic mood swings and strange drunk-in diatribes like he does? Do you know any one? Didn't think so. So, ya... I LOVE my cat
and he loves me ...that doesn't make me gay, just lucky

one of those mornings. Couldn't sleep, couldn't wake up. Lost in limbo land. I've got a shit-load of painting to do, plenty of ideas, just haven't sold anything recently so running out of things to paint with and on. Also down to my last beer. Depressing. I did the gallery thing Friday night with some friends, also the down town art walk Thursday. Its always good to try and keep your finger on the pulse( plus let people know your still alive). Ended up at a friends loft and hung out till about 3am. Got up early Saturday and did some painting,but not quite early enough and missed a friends funeral. Death sucks. He was 48. Is it always to young to die or just to late? Fell asleep around 8pm and woke up late Sunday afternoon. Just laid around and read "Behind Enemy Lines" a book about the Corps during the Korean war.
Now its Monday, I'm drinking my last beer and it seems to be just one of those mornings:

Well, Lilli and company really pulled it off, the show was fantastic! Lots of people , LOTS of very cool art and it went with out a hitch! The low cloud cover never turned to rain, it just made all the neon glow that more intensely. It was really a beautiful sight to behold! AND I was able to finish my first ever black light painting on black velvet! ( with a special thanks to Roark art supplies for the day-glow paint)

A Sketchy Portrait of an Artist From Downtown L.A.

Emmeric James Konrad: avant-garde artist or simply a madman with cool, shockingly-white-and-Andy-Warholish-like hair?

As a 10 year veteran of the now suddenly explosive art scene of downtown L.A., Konrad is the walking embodiment of the atypical artist: motorcycle driving, four years U.S. Marine Search & Rescue, hard drinking procurer of lady’s hearts, first generation, American-born German who’s old man actually went through Ellis-fucking-Island. Konrad’s work has been compared to that of Disney or Terry Gilliam’s early work with Monty Python…on crack.

His subjects are nudes or animals (the bunny is a big deal) or anything else that needs to be loved. He captures in animated grotesqueness in his fellow man that which most cannot see: no, not all that “inner beauty” crap, but the true ugliness of our nature done up in all its goofy, menacing glory.

Wanting to take a peek into the spinning wheels of Emmeric’s head, we met at “Crappy Joe’s” on 7th & Main (one of his many disturbing haunts) for buck-twenty-five beers and shots of something very lethal.

ME: At what age did you decide to become an artist?

EM: Three. My mom, a teacher, took me to a museum where I saw Picasso for the first time in Chicago. I knew then I wanted to paint. My first painting at that age was of a bird and a tree. My mother still has it, actually, a watercolor. It’s not bad. And then when I officially decided to paint, near the end of high school, right about the time my parents divorced, my father said, ‘If you want to be a artist, then you’re going to have to support yourself’. So I joined the Marine Corp to help me pay for art school.

ME: Good God, I guess working at the local McDonald’s wasn’t enough, huh?

EM: Naw, man, I needed the action. Still do from time-to-time. Occasionally, I get into scrapes here and there, but I love it; just experiencing life. Anyway, after the Corp I went to Otis Parsons here in downtown, it’s out by the airport now. Jackson Pollock had gone there you know way back. And I went to school with Camelia Garcia. That was the first time I was ever around ‘artists’. I mean, one day I’m jumping out of helicopters, and the next…I had always painted, that’s what I did, but to be in that environment. I learned a lot. Jeffry Valens was teaching there. Didn’t care for all the backstabbing, psychotic, competitiveness though, and in my senior year where we show our work for perspective galleries, that day, the riots started.

ME: That’s fucked.

EM: Yeah, but fortunately I had started selling my work in my junior year. Already had some collectors. Then a buddy of mine living in Tokyo gave me a call to do a show; some gallery owner saw my work in his house. Flew me out, set it up, and it ‘s been a hell of a ride. I think my work is pretty good, but I’ve also been incredibly lucky. I have been so blessed with the people that buy my stuff; they’re so passionate about art.

ME: Has living in the downtown environment inspired your art?

EM: Big time. Good art is always about inspiration and reacting to the environment you’re around. Art is about interaction, touching other people. Being affected by other people. And living all over town here you get to meet a lot of characters. I think I’ve lived in eight different lofts over the years. Right now I’m in the ‘Gronk Building’.

ME: So what do you like about Downtown L.A.?

EM: Potential. It a place where things can and do happen. It’s a place where things can germinate and grow. The problem I have with the New York scene is that it feels like it all happened already.

ME: I love that! It’s like, ‘Fuck you New York!’

EM: It’s true, everything’s about fucking New York, everyone always talks about what happened before, the clubs, the galleries, the people, what was going on, how it used to be. Fuck that! L.A. feels hungry right now. I love it here!

ME: So why do you paint?

EM: Because I can’t NOT paint. I think about what I’m going to paint all the time; the next one. Sleeping, driving, eating, it’s always there in my head. And I love it when the art is finished, in my studio, and ends up in somebody’s house, it mutates; it takes on a different light, a different flavor. And that’s the most amazing thing in the world, in that you have such a personal thing, but it becomes such an interpersonal thing.

ME: Speaking about interpersonal, where is the most interesting place you’ve had sex?

EM: Whoa, what a great question out of left field! Oh man, I don’t know if you can print this, but…on top of the roof of the Hotel Figueroa. We snuck up there. Overlooking the downtown skyline at night with a gorgeous woman. Now that was pretty fucking phenomenal. How about you?

ME: On the roof of the garage across the street from the Roosevelt Hotel, on the hood of my car.

EM: Nice. It’s something about being on top of things.

ME: So what’s your biggest fear as a writer? Oh fuck, I mean as an artist.

EM: Ha! That was brilliant.

ME: No, sorry, man. Sorry. What a fuckin’ slip.

EM: Naw, it’s cool. My biggest fear as an artist is dying before I do my best work. One of my favorite artists, Jean Michael Basquiat died when he was 27. Imagine what he could have done by now? The work he never got to do? My God…

(At this point I had to drop a quarter in order to use the can for a minute {lovely place} and when I got back EM was setting down my recorder. It was the next day at home, coming to at 4pm, that I heard the following in a cryptic manner: “I walked into the fields and the little bunnies were eating all the roses; all of the roses. So I killed them. They were very tasty.”)

ME: So what’s the best thing you’ve ever painted?

EM: My last painting.

ME: And where do you go from here?

EM: My next painting.

ME: Ok, smart-ass: Ginger or Mary Ann?

EM: A threesome would be nice. How about You?

ME: Mrs. Howell, of course.

EM: You sick bastard.

ME: Drug of choice?

EM: Women.

ME: What was the name of the first girl you kissed?

EM: Oh God, I remember this, I was just talking about it with my dad the other day…Emily. Her name was Emily. I was 3 years old. Yours?

ME: Diana. She kissed me on the cheek. Second grade. She was also the first and last woman to ever say ‘I love you’ to me.

EM: Wow, that’s heavy. I have this weird thing where I usually hear that within this first week, and because its so quick it makes me not believe it.

ME: Talk about heavy, Christ! Ok, last one: What is the one thing out there now in the world that you wish you could have painted?

EM: That’s easy: “Les Demoiselles d’ Avingnon” by Picasso. 1907. It’s a cube portrait of five prostitutes in a brothel. It’s beautiful, man. Fuckin’ perfect!

410 Boyd has hired a brand new Bathroom Attendant, this hansom young man , working his way through college while supporting 5 illegitimate children, 2 & 1/2 ex-wives , one cat and a VERY expensive weekly alcohol bill, is proud to announce that the once painted over , thought to be lost forever, bathroom mural made by the artist Emmeric James Konrad has been resurrected and IMPROVED . This enterprising (and handsome) young man has decided the mural is finally ready for public viewing. He will be proudly on duty THIS Saturday evening from 8pm till 11pm to admit BOTH men AND women . Please come out and support this wonderful young man! Saturday evening @ 410 Boyd st. in the heart of Down Town LA, just South of Little Tokyo. They have secure, gated parking.

well, not a whole hell of a lot of bathroom excavation went on last night at 410 Boyd, but the Cinders rocked the house and David Walker and his guys put on a cool multimedia show, plus David and I flung some paint together ala Warhal and Basquiat, starting a mighty fine collaboration piece. Joel, John and Mike and their lovely female compatriot (whose name escapes me at the moment) kicked ass at the bar, keeping the thirsty hordes at bay( not an easy , nor safe ,task), no one was maimed or seriously injured so all in all a good show! Thanks to all who turned up to show their support, it means a lot!

A couple of years ago I was commissioned to do a mural in the mens room at 410 Boyd st. As most of you know, I did it and it was pretty cool.Well the old owner had one customer complain that it was scary( ie. he couldn't pee while being watched by imaginary figures,) so she had it painted out. That was than, this is now. The new owners of 410 Boyd are having me excavate the old painting, sanding down the walls to reveal my mural once again. I start this Friday night, 8pm, with music by the band Cinders, dancers and drink specials. So come on by and see what happens! A new 410 Boyd is going to be revealed! Hope you can make it!

Once more, Jim and I are having a show in down town Pomona, so we're getting a bus! $25 gets you pre bus cocktails at Bedlam's down town LA spot, a bus ride too and back again to the show in Pomona, plus entrance to our LITTLE after party back here in down town la. If you weren't on the bus, or don't have a pass from the Pomona show, ya don't get in! Last time Jim and i did this was three years ago, and it was a blast! If your up for it:PLEASE RSVP we have limited seating on the bus.
Bedlam down town LA at 6PM Saturday June 11th for pre-cocktails, the bus leaves for Pomona at 7:30pm. I'm in hell right now, rearranging my studio, trying to get things in shape for some up coming show, something I've been trying to do for months. I fucking hate doing stuff like that, I get board WAY to easily( ADD???) so it's like having my fingernails removed slowly while being forced to listen to the sound track from the Titanic. But something wonderful happened. I found an old stash of paint brushes, ones I haven't used in years, each one, when I looked at it, I remembered from different paintings I had used them on. Old soldiers from the battle field of art. The ones I could save I did, now I can not wait to use them on new paintings, it's like having old friends over for drinks and the conversation rekindles the passion to work on old projects, only make them new and better. I have my old soldiers with me again, look out world, it's time to paint!

A week ago, Thursday the 12th of May, Lilli organized a big group show at the Cal-Trans building , 1st and Main in Down Town LA. It was fantastic. Great work by a diverse group of artists, especially Eric James' huge assemblage thing( foto's to come)that hung over your head as you walked into the courtyard. Great music by several bands including Mr. Tomalley. We made the Cal-Trans people VERY nervous, all these creative types who were," oh my God LOOK! THEY'RE DRINKING BEER!!!" I got to do a performance painting that I ALMOST finished, but an ever vigilant CHP officer caught some one( not one of the artists, just some guy checking out the show) smoking .....A JOINT!!! so they shut down the entire show and tossed everyone out. Fun Fun FUN!!!!

LILLI’S 1 ST SPRING 2005 24 HR MULTI MEDIA EVENT ART POTLUCK!!! Yes here it is, time again, and we are going to have some fun surprises happening this coming Saturday, April 30. Time: starting at Noon till whenever( probibly the next morning), with body casting and a mellow afternoon for anyone who is shy and /or anyone who wants to be body cast and then come back for all other art affairs later that afternoon and evening.. Location: at Jim’s Bedlam Warehouse: 1275 E. 6 th Street, Los Angeles (parking in lot across the street) 213. 247.8800 for any further more detailed information. Lilli has a pretty colorful lineup this time . Starting with a new ensemble : THE CINDERS opening around 7ish (whoever attended my opening at Cafe Metropol knows who they are) Followed by the dynamic duo: THE SUNSHINE BROTHERS OF HOLLYWOOD. After that, Lilli's favorite house band : THE TOLEDO SHOW steaming up the room.Next will be a set by the HORSE PAINTERS (another fabulous new music band on the block) than the wonderful and unique ANNI ROSSI on her violin, will be appearing after her gig in Pasadena. Expect a few surprises showing up during the night to make their appearances while everyone can mingle and enjoy a Multiple potluck of art projections on the wall (bring anything art related, performance videos or any art action and documentary stuff ,funny stuff, slide shows...anything you have and Lilli will play it off the VHS player or off the computer onto the walls.) PORTRAIT PAINTING by EMMERIC JAMES KONRAD(thats me).While all this is going on Lilli will be body casting any volunteers ( looking still for male and female bodies for her new MODERN DAY SAINT MONOLITH project). Whoever wants to participate and is shy, show up between noon and 6ish before the crowd starts to happen, otherwise you can drop your clothes any time, bring a towel and bathrobe, we have showers on the premises for clean up afterwards.
